Overview
Orphaned at only 7 years, young duchess Solancei is taken into the home of her uncle and aunt, the rulers of the Ostravahn Realm, but though she soon forms a fast friendship with her cousin Princess Iambre, even with her unusual abilities, Solancei is commonly considered contrary, not to mention ‘trouble’. Now grown up, Solancei’s undesirable behaviour has long since been put to good use as the secret life shield of Iambre – a role she willingly embraces and is prepared to sacrifice her all to fulfil. However, when encouraged by her mentor to enter an illegal backstreet prize fight in order to sharpen her skills, little does Solancei know that this event will throw her upon a dark path that could easily lead to hers and Iambre’s destruction. Her life in peril, Solancei learns of an ally who plots to overthrow everything she holds dear, but in the meantime, not even she could begin to understand that a second, far older and insidious danger also stirs - not within Ostravah – but from without. Because an old forgotten war is about to rekindle. It awakens the Guardians of the world from their long sleep - for the mad gods and their chaos-seeking demons are once again trying to break past the Veils to threaten the core of life itself. To the Guardians the battle should be little more than an old story with another page added, but with new fracture lines now ruining their once infallible power, this time everything is different. Now, for good or bad, every faction will seek the sacred Twins – the only two people who can wield the Artefact designed to strengthen the Veils and vanquish the Gods. Of course, the Guardians plan to reach them first, only one problem remains: the twins already appear to be missing. And as the Veils are failing, time is running out… Reader feedback - ”What an enthralling book this was! Atmospheric, with elegant language. My particular favourites among the characters were the lovely…. Iambre and Solancei, and their musings on the page. Also, I liked overall how the major story arcs were revealed little by little…. Also, I felt that how Solancei’s tragic past event was re-visited throughout the book brought meaning and depth to the story. And what was that about magic diminished in the world? I’m glad there are more books in the series, because I must have more!” “…the intertwining narratives of the divine council, Solancei's memoir, Iambre and Solancei herself introduce the reader to the vibrant, richly textured kingdom of Ostravah. If you're looking for complex high fantasy (and don't mind learning new terms), then this is the book for you.” ”This is not a ‘beach read’ more a completely immersive high fantasy world which is well worth the investment, commitment and concentration required. However every reader will gain something different from this tale an offering which will extend one's own thinking and imagination as good art always will. Recommended for those who want something deeper and more enriching.” “…I hung in there and within a very short period of time I was aligned with the author's writing style and thoroughly enjoying her vivid imagination and story telling. This book has several subplots that eventually weave together to bring the story to a nice close and prepare you for the next installment; which I'm eager to dive into. If you are more accustomed to lighter, HEA, fast reads, do yourself a favor and give this author a try anyway. I'm sure that, like me, you're quickly become one of her reader fans. Highly recommended.” “I was captured by the language right away, which sounded archaic and but it created an authentic feel of a fantasy world.... The author is gifted with wealth of vocabulary and fluency of the language.”
