Nobody saw it coming, but it came without warning and without mercy. Country after country fell under the weight of the collapsing social fabric of towns and cities infected by lawlessness and orderlessness. The great equalizer arrived on the crest of a wave of widespread mayhem brought about by the Outbreak. From the global catastrophe of a pandemic which has just began, those still alive do so in confusion at how nothing of what they are witnessing makes any sense.Here lies the beginning seeds concerning a group of random individuals caught up in the midst of those opening days and weeks. These people who for the most part are strangers, but who over the course of their shared experience come to form a group of Immediate Survivors who are brought together by differing circumstances in a city in the South of England.Starting in a terraced house they broke into, the story begins as more survivors seek safety from the violence, murder and slaughter taking place on the city streets. Seeing the unfolding Outbreak through the eyes of this group of Immediate Survivors will reflect how the authorities of the United Kingdom tried to install order in those opening few days via emergency rescue stations using unprepared police and a disorganised military, while the Government struggled to impose much needed leadership and control against impossible odds.But as the Immediate Survivors will learn, their only chance to survive is to get out of the city themselves, into areas less populated, with the forestry area known as the Downs being a desired destination. Yet it becomes clear that a consequence of the Outbreak is not just the horrors brought about by the dead things but the atrocities threatened by some still alive who are using what is taking place for their own sickening gratification.
