The pair gets off to a bumpy start but soon develop a friendship that turns to love.Through his relationship with Lucretia, Rob begins to question the nature of his existence, and he prods her to remember her past. During their conversations, she remembers her suicide and realizes why she has been a ghost for the last century. Rob relates his history to her, his fateful meeting with Basil Desmond, who made him what he is.Robert and Lucretia discover that passions, ranging from love to hate, begin to cause her to materialize at times.Robert relates his near-death experience and later friendship with a kindly professor, Dr. Tomlinson, who is on a quest of his own to find his wife’s killer. He mistakes Rob for Desmond and attempts to kill him before the real killer’s identity is revealed during their struggle.Wishing to be together on the same plane, be it that of the material or spiritual, the lovers seek the aid of a friend of Rob’s, Miriam Masterson, a Wiccan healer. She and some members of her tradition come up with a plan, which is risky at best, to help them. The Pale and the Opaque is more than just a gothic paranormal love story with action spanning over two hundred years.
