Overview
It was a brief and fleeting moment of time when the beginnings of his terror first passed by him. It went by almost unnoticed and then was quickly forgotten. He may never connect these events with the awful trepidation and terror which will quickly follow. A dark and ominous feeling is clinging somewhere in the back of his mind, he is worried. He is low on gas and still driving ever deeper into the darkness and whatever awaits them there. It has been a long trip for them from their Jersey home to this deep and dark remote area of Ohio. Rick is a worrier. Running out of gas on this dark and desolate highway would be the perfect ending to a perfectly awful day. He can visualize the local newspaper headline, ‘Young Family Eaten by Locals as Car Runs out of Gas.’ What the locals are, he can only imagine, he thinks about wild animals or even an unknown species of sub-humans. There might be anything living out here in these darkening uninhabited forests. His new job at the Piketon Atomic Enrichment Plant requires him to relocate near the facility, and it is out in the middle of nowhere. To make matters worse, the facility requires three coal-fired power plants. The coal is supplied by the many trucks that run this narrow, curvy road. These huge trucks have the run of the highway, they run full, they run empty, and they run constantly. The choice between running out of gasoline and being eaten by locals or being crushed beneath a massive coal truck overwhelmed him. He feels his panic start to subside as he drives on. He knows he and Kathy both need a new beginning. They are looking forward to moving into the Marsdale House, a house that is actually a mansion. He finally saw a gas station on the side of the road, a run-down building with a lone gas pump behind the building. As he drove up the door opened, an older man stepped outside holding a shotgun in his hands. This did not bode well, he thought. The man peered into the darkness and asked, “What do you want?”“Just need some gas,” Rick replied.“Pumps round back, just go hed and pump yer gas,” he said. “You can pay me when yer dun,” The old pump started up with a loud horrible grinding as he flipped the switch. The numbers slowly turned, and he is sure at this rate he will be here all night. Then he heard it, a noise coming from somewhere behind him. He is not alone in the darkness. Something is there with him, something sinister in the dark shadows behind him. He doesn’t know what it is and is afraid to turn his head to find out. He feels its presence as it moves closer. It is so close he can feel its hot breath on the back of his neck. Something reached out and touched him, something awful, coarse and sharp. He turned around, peering into the darkness. A human shape appeared in front of him, the long-haired gray creature recoiled from him. Rick backed away in horror as he realized the creature wasn’t anything human. Then the creature spoke to him. “Help me——help me,” the poor thing cried out. As Rick backed away from the pump, he dropped the nozzle on the ground. He didn’t realize it continued to pump gasoline. He heard the crack as flames lit up the spilled gasoline. He felt the heat from the fire on his back. The people in the store rushed out and ran in his direction yelling, “FIRE, FIRE!” He watched as the flames thickened and quickly spread between his feet. He can smell the soles of his shoes as they began to melt from the heat. Panic has frozen him in place, he cannot move. The creature reached out and pulled him away from the fire as they rolled together across the gravel lot. It stood up, and backed away as the people rush toward them, turned and ran in the direction of the highway. It stopped at the edge of the road until the massive coal truck rounded the turn before it stepped in front of the vehicle. Rick heard the sound of the impact as the truck crushed the life from the creature before knocking it into the ditch.
