Overview
The Ghost Phone saga opens with three widely disparate but equally thrilling tales of action, intrigue and utter strangeness as the former Albert Einstein's "spirit side actions" open a path for the deceased to speak with the living. Once the connection has been made, the line is open for anyone's use. In "The Professor's Gambit," Tyme Weathers is tasked with saving the entire world from a secret physics experiment in the California desert. Next up in "Threadcutters," ambitious thieves Sal and Gazel are robbing a western antiquities museum when they get a call from ghost outlaw Teak Brethren, who sends them off on a treasure hunt as part of a larger scheme to fund a secret endeavor that will, naturally, benefit Brethren and his spectral allies. The first volume finishes with "Occam's Shaving Kit," wherein puzzle-loving contest winners have been gathered at a remote British mansion to cooperate in seeking a great reward. But for whom are they finding it? Though each of these stories stands alone, they are in fact linked in the "big picture" sense...that is to say, "strange connections" are already forming. As the series continues, expect some of the characters introduced in these initial three tales to return and even interact with one another...whether they survived the story or not! The grand scheme will gradually come together as the individual dramas play out in their own widely varying ways. And to that point, please note that the moods of the stories will shift from one to the next, just like the setting and plot and even the genre. This is clearly the case with these three tales: "The Professor's Gambit" plays like a fast-paced-broad-audience spy thriller, while "Threadcutters" is a grim and gritty road saga with sex, violence and dirty dealing; then the first volume finishes with what seems to be a variation on the classic "strangers stranded in a mansion" theme...but, in keeping with the developing feel of the Ghost Phone series, isn't quite what the eccentric cast thinks. Ghost Phone breaks new ground by jumping from genre to genre, holding to only the single linking thread that every story centers around a call from the "other side." So yes, there's a supernatural element. But what that call produces could be a love story...or a murder mystery...or even a slapstick comedy.
