And his clothes, they reeked of the horrid mess before him, wet from the terrible deed already done. There was no way to fix this. The boy was more than an accomplice, he was the very reason for his newfound dilemma. And, there was no time left to ponder consequences. No, he was living them. The police were coming. They’d be by at any moment. How he knew this was but for two reasons. Firstly, he had phoned for help. But more than that, he could sense their approach with his keen inner-eye. Their heartbeats not far now, closing in with swiftness. His mind automatically reached out and felt into theirs, seeking to know they would believe him, if they would help him.Of either he couldn’t say.Time passed slowly, what felt to be hours, although surely much less had actually ticked by than he realized.Behind you.A voice in the boy’s head warned him of the body at his back, the unexpected figure who was either villain or those he expected. The boy froze, unable to think clearly as he had already dealt with way too much trauma that day, the wetness that covered him, blood on his hands and face, he couldn’t push himself to do anything else, let alone run.A strong hand grabbed his shoulder and roughly threw him upon cold cement floor.“Boy, keep your head down.” The gruff voice was direct and expected no reply. Metal cuffs clicked into place, binding hands in an uncomfortable manner. From the ground more than one set of feet were seen but of the three figures no face was visible.“What happened here?” The words left an uncomfortable silence in their wake, failing to solicit any response from a trembling teenage boy.He couldn’t reply. He could only stare at the mess that he was forced to look at from closer than ever before.“Son, I asked you a question.” Shaken slightly by cuffed wrists, it was obvious he needed to reply. But after such awfulness, how?The boy hesitated and slowly inhaled before releasing. He was mortified, a trapped creature overwhelmed by fear and guilt. These men were no match for it, nor could they comprehend what he would tell them.He should have handled this on his own.And yet, he was incapable of action.
