Kafka joined the "Arbeiter-Unfall-Versicherungs-Anstalt" (Workers' Accident Insurance Institution) in 1908, where he remained a civil servant until his early retirement in 1922, after completing his PhD in law. Franz Kafka suffered a hemorrhage in late summer 1917, which led to the development of tuberculosis, from which he died on June 3, 1924, at the age of 41.
