Isobel Manchester had just finished her undergraduate program at the university in London and was in dire need of a break…both intellectually and emotionally. Her parents had grand designs for her to continue on and earn a law degree but being a lawyer was the last thing that Isobel desired for her life. Her father was a lawyer as had been his father before him and all she saw was how miserable it made him. Sure the money was great, and it had given her a life of relative leisure, but the trade-off did not seem worth it to her. What Isobel had her heart truly set on was a career in journalism with a special interest in true-crime stories. But after having been chastised roundly when bringing this up at home, Isobel learned quickly to keep this goal to herself. While not revealing her true intentions to her father and mother, Isobel managed to get them to agree to let her take a gap year from school if she agreed to begin law school when that hiatus was over. She did not like lying to them but after what had happened to her sister, Emily, who had reluctantly succumbed to this pressure to add another lawyer to the Manchester clan, Isobel was determined to go her own way. To fulfill this gap year, Isobel had secured a position in New York City working as a nanny in a large house, The Bernard Mansion, that she had read about with a mysterious history possibly involving multiple murders during Prohibition Era America. With this job in place, Isobel planned to continue her research on the Bernard Mansion and spin what she had obtained so far with some live personal interviews and anything else she could dig up on-site to parlay it all into a true-crime report...or if that did not work out a novel based on true events of Richard and Leonora Darby who had been the owners at the time. And who incidentally were the possible murder victims from a tragic fire. Isobel was sure this story would not only show her parents what great talent she had in this field and thus change their minds about her professional goals, but also give her a leg up with her graduate program. Isobel’s arrival at the mansion shocked her when her anticipation of some grand manor ended up being a really rundown place in dire need of renovation. But she did not let that deter her from her research into a story that she was sure would solve the old incident. Even her new boss, Amanda Evans, with her surly and cold demeanor, did not deter Isobel from her plan. But as time went on and Isobel began to poke around the old mansion, inexplicable events and curious ongoings began to make Isobel truly question her own sanity. Was she just letting her overactive imagination run wild or was there something much more sinister and diabolic going on at the Bernard Mansion than she had planned on? Isobel was miles from home with only an old childhood friend to relay all she was discovering…but has she gotten in over her head in New York with no way out and no one to come to her rescue?
