La Très Sainte Trinosophie, The Most Holy Trinosophia, has been described as “the rarest of occult manuscripts”.When Manly P. Hall first made the texts available to the English-speaking world, the best available images of the extraordinary manuscript in the library at Troyes, France, known as MS2400, were of poor quality, low resolution and black and white. Thanks to the Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes (IRHT), founded in 1937 in France as a part of the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), a massive task was undertaken to study and – more importantly – to make high quality copies of books, parchments documents, papers and papyrus manuscripts from antiquity to the Renaissance and beyond, including all such finds in the Mediterranean basin. Over the years, and using increasingly sophisticated equipment, they have made available images of earlier documents of extraordinary clarity and fidelity, which are extensively used in the academic field for study. These are now made available in this book with the express permission of the IRHT and the Bibliothèque de Troyes.The attribution of the manuscript to Saint Germain is due to a bookseller’s note pasted to the front of the manuscript, which, without further proof, remains moot.The translator has taken great pains to offer a book which, rather than being a dry academic resumé of the origins of the book, is an opportunity to experience the book as those would have done for the first time when it came to light. As well as providing an enlightening Introduction, in which he compares the book to the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and discusses a number of theories concerning the book, given the further knowledge we have acquired in the intervening years from the 1930s, he presents the book in its entirety as a medium for contemplation and meditation. I particularly like the fact that he has given the work such prominence in the book, placing it immediately after his initial commentary, instead of relegating it to an Appendix. This allows the reader to gain some signposts from his expert commentary, before moving directly into gaining personal insight from the images in the book.Indeed, the book should be experienced, then studied in its original form before moving onto the translation, which now has an opportunity to be used as a supportive tool, rather than as the immediate purpose of this translation. This way the reader will have an opportunity to contemplate what the images mean to him or her, before reading the accompanying text. In a way this translation benefits the anglophone over the francophone, since it allows this intermediate step to take place without the intervention of words.Original hardback edition for collectors.
